Pre-operative Instructions
The following instructions may be helpful when preparing for your upcoming surgery. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any last minute questions. We can be reached at Durham Periodontics Phone Number 905-448-0644 during regular business hours.
If you are taking Coumadin or another blood thinner, you may be required to discontinue it as directed by your physician. Do not discontinue or make any changes to your medications without checking with your medical doctor first. If you take antibiotic premedication prior to dental treatment, please take it as directed before your surgery. Please inform Dr. Usman or his team if you are taking any new medications since your consultation appointment including any herbal or naturopathic medications. You will feel better if you have eaten approximately 4 hours prior to surgery. We keep the office cool, so dress warmly (in layers). You may bring your iPod or MP3 player with you if you like.
In order to evaluate your progress and healing, we will see you for your first post-operative visit approximately 10 days subsequent to your procedure. In many instances, 8 to 10 weeks after a procedure, we will also look forward to seeing you back for your first periodontal maintenance cleaning and an examination of tissue maturation upon which a maintenance cleaning schedule will be recommended.
Antibiotics
Please alert the office to any allergies or sensitivities that you might have to antibiotics. You will be prescribed an antibiotic if Dr. Usman determines it to be necessary. Take as directed until gone. It is not advisable to take these medications on an empty stomach, as nausea may result. For women taking birth control pills, be advised that antibiotics may interfere with their effectiveness.
Sedatives
If you elect to use one of the following oral sedatives you must have a ride to and from the office. Please bring your remaining tablets with you. Remember, we encourage you to eat prior to your surgery, unless advised otherwise.
- Ativan (Lorazepam)
- Valium (Diazepam)
- Triazalam (Halcion)
